RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

R & D work is being carried out by the faculty for developing new gadgets, looms, etc. to improve the production quality, to increase the wages and to reduce the fatigue of the weaver. The R&D work carried out by various other institutions and technicians for developing improved gadgets are also available in the institute for demonstration to the weavers.

The following looms and techniques are readily kept in working condition for dissemination of technology through expos and exhibitions.

IMPROVED FRAME LOOM

• Handloom attached with five wheel take-up motion, fly wheel etc for producing long length of quality fabrics with uniform picks per inch and increased production.

HANDLOOM DOBBY

2

• Handlooms Dobby can be used to replace the multi treadle weaving.
• Higher production – Less cost of production – Less fatigue- Higher earnings – Single treadle operation – less fabric defects

SOLID BODER CATCH CORD TECHNIQUE

3

• Solid order weaving with single shuttle (body weft)
• Fly shuttle weaving.
• Border weft is f ed from separate packages.
• High speed weaving – increased production- Single weaver – High earning – less cost of production.

KORVAI SLEY- SOLID BORDER WEAVING

4

• It is additional slay attached with regular fly shuttle sley.
• The additional sley carries border we ft shuttles.
• It produces sold border similar in texture to traditional solid border sarees.
• Higher production – easy to operate- Higher earning – single weaver.

MULTIPLE BUTTA WEAVING SLEY

5

• Handloom sarees are decorated with extra weft buttas (Figures) across the width in body and pallau.
• The No of individual buttas vary from 5 to 10.
• 5 to 10 sirkees (Small bamboo sticks) are used to weave individual buttas.

MOTORISED JACQUARD LIFTING DEVICE

6

• It is another modern lifting device used for lifting jacquard.
• An electrical motor is used.
• No depreciation.
• No Compression.
• Approx expenditure per month Rs 100/-

TWIN CLOTH SLEY

7

Narrow width fabrics upto 20” are produced in Handloom for table mats, napkins towels etc.

• The cost of production increases if single fabric is woven on a loom.
• It leads to reduced wages.

Weavers are unwilling to take up production of such varieties of fabrics.

DURRY WEAVING

8
9
10

Plain durries popularly known as “Jamakkalam” in Tamilnadu is woven through shuttle pit looms.

• It is weft predominant fabric.
• Hence, to have better coverage of weft the weaver pulls the weft at it centre and makes a loom before beating up the weft.

ITCHAL KARANCHI VIBRATING BOX LOOMS

• Sley is attached with vibrating box (2 Boxes) on one side and single box on another side.
• Suitable for weaving two colour check effect.
• Attached worm and worm wheel take up motion.
• Higher production – Better quality – Increased earnings.
